The private healthcare developer, Egyptians for Health Care Services (EHCS), signed on 13 September 2022 two agreements with Tabreed, the UAE-headquartered District Energy company, to be accountable for the design, engineering, procurement and construction of a district cooling and heating plant and the related distribution network, for the provision of cooling and heating services to the CapitalMed Healthcare City.
EHCS launched its first smart and green mega project, CapitalMed Healthcare City, to provide high-quality integrated and personalized healthcare services. The project will be built on 137.32 Feddans (577,000 square meters) and, upon completion, will house more than 4,000 beds, 700 ICUs, and 70 operating rooms.
The privately-run CapitalMed Healthcare City will provide a wide range of services and plans to establish 19 specialized healthcare centers, two hotels, and a commercial mall. In its first phase, CapitalMed will launch its services to the public in 2023, with the hub including a 532-bed multi-specialty university hospital, a Doctors’ Plaza of 168 outpatient clinics, an advanced Simulation Center, and a Virtual Hospital, as well as a Central Command Center and Central Utility Building.
The National Central Cooling Company PJSC (more commonly known as Tabreed) is specialised in the field of design, engineering, procurement, construction, operation, and maintenance of district cooling and heating plants, widely recognized on an international level. EHCS invited Tabreed to build, own and operate a bespoke district energy plant to service the cooling and heating requirements of CapitalMed, via a lease agreement and 30-year service provision agreement.
The signing ceremony, held in Cairo’s Badr University, was attended EHCS Board members and senior managers, as well as senior members of Tabreed’s Executive Management Team and Tabreed’s Country Manager, representing the recently opened office in Egypt.
Following the signing ceremony, Dr Hassan El Kalla; the Chairman and Managing Director of EHCS, stated: “The idea of establishing a fully-fledged healthcare city was always a dream for healthcare professionals in Egypt. In efforts to transform healthcare provision, while also contributing to economic development though increasing the role of private providers, the idea has been translated into an unprecedented project that will serve both local and regional needs.
“The CapitalMed project, which will be carried out by EHCS, will be built in Badr City, across from the New Administrative Capital, close to New Cairo and various new communities. It will serve a population of more than five million people living within a 20-minute radius, and more than 20 million located within a 90-minute radius. EHCS is looking for long-term partnership with Tabreed to achieve a unique access story of cooperation.”
Eng. Khalid Abdulla Al Marzooqi, Tabreed’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “Tabreed only entered the Egypt market in February this year. I said then that commencing operations in Egypt was an important strategic move that’s part of our long-term plans for sustainable growth beyond our traditional geographic borders, and this new signing with EHCS shows how committed Tabreed is when it comes to expansion.
“We are always seeking new opportunities with other forward-thinking organisations aligned with our key values, and this new development is no exception. EHCS and Tabreed will work extremely well together, sharing common goals of maximum efficiency and a relentless pursuit of operational excellence. Our operations prevent the release of millions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions and we are a force for good in communities all over the Middle East and beyond. I know I speak on behalf of everyone at Tabreed when I say that we look forward to a very long and fruitful presence in Egypt, as we bring our unrivaled expertise to such an exciting, dynamic and promising market.”
